Mairuwa …my water, your water!
Don’t ever have to go a thousand miles to get water – use Mairuwa!
Mairuwa locates and maps water resources and stores a database of these resources thereby allowing users to access this information from various platforms – web and mobile (web, java application, SMS and over time – android).
It also allows the regulating body (in this case, Lagos State Water Corporation) to map out problematic areas and this will in turn, aid water distribution.
We will used crowd-sourced data, SMS longcodes and keywords, the web interface will also contain realtime maps while all the interfaces will give you the nearest water resource and it’s distance from your location while also showing you its ease of sccess. We will be implementing GIS technologies as well as traditional programming languages.

Seriously, for a WorldBank Water hackathon winning idea, I feel the number of votes here are not commensurate. We did not have the hackathon in my country and I think we would have done better with this application if those in your country do not appreciate it. Everyone has issues with water. Vote to make this a reality.

However, this is how far we have gone – Our various stand alone applications are ready, awaiting deployment. Our crowdsourcing db is also on its way to completion and our website is up and running. Love, love, love this idea! WIll you be gathering info about people who share their water through oustide taps at the houses/ offices as well? I wonder whether you could also suggest ways of conserving and sharing water as we are going to have to learn how to harvest rain water, recycle sewage water etc if we are to have enough water for us all.

awesome idea! Water is such a necessity!!! and true like Ade said…if info such as taps outside compounds, Sponsored boreholes, well, LSWC is captured, that will be wonderful.
Also, leaking pipes can be mapped too…hopefully the relevant water corporation will be logged on too to fix it asap!

Actually, leaked and burst pipes are part of our applications. Also, when we said any form of water resource, we meant it – that means from private individuals with taps to public boreholes and even car wash and swimming pools and of course, natural water reosurces like rivers will be mapped.
